How refiners actually handle a weighted candlestick
Refiners do not accept weighted candlesticks at gross weight. Standard trade practice is to crush the base, separate the sterling shell from the filler, and settle the seller against the recovered silver only. That process is mechanical and quick on a light-gauge shell.
The typical workflow: the refiner receives the piece, weighs it gross, and photographs the marks. The base cover disc is removed. The candlestick is placed in a press or hydraulic ram that flattens the shell and pushes out the filler. The filler is discarded or landfilled. The sterling shell is cleaned of plaster or pitch residue, weighed as recovered silver, and pooled with the day's other sterling scrap for melting.
The seller receives an advance quote based on a percentage-of-gross estimate for that maker and era, then a final settlement based on the actual recovered silver weight. Reputable refiners publish both figures in writing. The final settlement is usually within a few percentage points of the advance quote when the maker is standard American mid-century production.
The base cover disc, the wax residue, the felt padding, and the filler have no scrap value. Anything the refiner cannot recover as silver is written off. The seller does not pay a fee for that write-off directly, but the percentage-of-gross quote already reflects the expected shell-to-filler ratio for the maker.
Not every refiner accepts weighted candlesticks. Some scrap dealers refuse them because the processing time cuts into margin on small lots. The two figures bracket the honest resale range for this hypothetical pair. Below the 199.80 dollar refiner floor, the offer is worse than crushing and melting the shell. Above the 349.65 dollar auction estimate, the buyer needs a specific reason to pay a bigger premium (named Georgian maker, matched candelabra set, museum-grade condition, rare pattern).
The wrong number to quote is the naive melt figure of 999.28 dollars. That number assumes the entire gross weight is sterling. It is off by a factor of four on a typical weighted pair. Any dealer who hears the naive number knows the seller has not accounted for the filler and will price accordingly.

Georgian, Victorian, and mid-century American in broad tiers

A matched candelabra set (six or eight branches, complete with removable arms and drip pans) is worth an appraisal for the same reason. Complete matched sets are rare in the market and carry a completeness premium that broken-out singles do not. A refiner treats every piece as weight and pays the same either way.
A pair with unusual or documented provenance (a piece from a named estate, a piece with an original presentation inscription for a public event, a piece from a museum deaccession) may command a documentary premium above shell melt. That premium disappears the moment the base is crushed.
A pair that has not been weighed accurately is worth weighing before any decision. A pair estimated at 15 troy ounces gross that actually weighs 45 troy ounces has three times the silver the seller thought. Refiners will pay on actual weight, so the underestimated pair sells better after a real measurement.
Limits and caveats to keep in mind
Every dollar figure on this page is a computation from a stated silver spot price and a stated shell-content assumption, not a quote from a dealer and not a forecast. Silver spot prices move continuously during market hours. The 30 dollar per troy ounce figure used in the worked example is a round number picked for arithmetic clarity, not a prediction of any future price.
The 25 percent shell-content assumption is a working figure for a light-gauge American mid-century weighted pair. Real ratios vary by maker, by era, by size, and by design. A specific pair might come in at 18 percent shell content or at 35 percent. Anyone selling a large or unusual pair should ask two or three refiners for their percentage-of-gross estimate before accepting a scrap quote.

What is a pair of weighted sterling candlesticks worth in silver alone?

Apply the 0.925 sterling fineness factor to the estimated shell troy ounces, then multiply by the silver spot price per troy ounce. At an illustrative 30 dollars per troy ounce spot price, a 36 troy ounce gross weighted pair holds roughly 250 dollars of silver, not the roughly 999 dollars the naive gross calculation would suggest.
Can I melt down my weighted candlesticks?
Yes, but not at home. Refiners crush the base, separate the shell from the filler with a press or hydraulic ram, then melt the recovered silver. Home melting of a filled candlestick is dangerous because plaster and pitch degas and pop under heat. A commercial refiner is the safe channel and settles the seller against actual recovered silver weight.
Are Georgian silver candlesticks worth more than modern ones?
Usually yes, on the auction market, for named makers in original condition. Documented Georgian pairs by Paul de Lamerie (1688 to 1751), Paul Storr (1770 to 1844), or comparable makers can command strong premiums above the shell melt floor at Sotheby's, Christie's, and other top houses. Anonymous or heavily damaged Georgian pieces trade closer to the shell melt floor because condition and attribution set the ceiling for premium.
Do silver candlesticks always tarnish?
Sterling silver tarnishes over time as the alloy reacts with sulfur in the air. Tarnish is cosmetic and does not reduce the silver content or the value at melt. Aggressive polishing can reduce value on a collector-grade piece because it wears down maker's marks and thins the metal. Light polishing with a proper silver cloth is standard household maintenance and does no harm.
Should I sell my weighted candlesticks to a refiner or an auction house?
A refiner for anonymous or damaged pieces where the shell melt floor is the whole story. An auction house for named-maker sterling candlesticks in good condition, especially Georgian pieces or matched candelabra sets.
